About ChatWithPDF
What Is This?
ChatWithPDF is a free tool that lets you chat with any PDF document using AI — entirely in your browser. Your file never leaves your device. There's no sign-up, no upload, and no server-side processing.
Why We Built It
Most "chat with PDF" tools require you to upload your document to a server. That means your private contracts, medical records, financial statements, and personal documents pass through someone else's infrastructure. We think that's unnecessary.
Modern browsers can run AI models locally using WebGPU. pdf.js can parse PDFs without a server. By combining these technologies, we built a PDF chat tool where everything stays on your device.
How It Works
- PDF parsing: pdf.js (Mozilla) extracts text from your PDF in the browser
- Text chunking: The extracted text is split into chunks for efficient retrieval
- RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation): When you ask a question, relevant chunks are found using keyword matching
- AI generation: The relevant context and your question are sent to a local Llama 3 model running via WebGPU, or to your own API key
AI Modes
- Browser AI (WebGPU): Llama 3.1 8B, 3.2 3B, or 1B depending on your GPU. Completely private. Requires a WebGPU-capable browser.
- Your API Key: Use your own OpenAI or Anthropic key. Calls go directly from your browser. We never see your key.
- Text Search: No AI needed. Keyword search across the PDF with page numbers. Works everywhere.
